What is ‘Quiet Quitting’?
Do you feel like quiet quitting?
Quiet quitting is a term that has gained popularity online in recent months- essentially it describes what happens when an employee stops going above and beyond in their role. They stop working late, only respond to emails during work hours and limit how much effort they put into their work.
Essentially, it describes a shift away from cultural ideals that prioritise being ‘on the grind’ at all times. After a global pandemic, it makes sense that the workforce is shifting into a place where work/life boundaries are being made clearer.
But the popularisation of quiet quitting should also be considered within the context of the Great Resignation, which began gaining traction this time last year. Is the increase of quiet quitting actually about boundary setting or is it linked with social dissatisfaction with the structure of the workforce?
Every business and candidate requires different things from their workplace.
As recruiters we have insight into hundreds of businesses across the country and we see firsthand every day the way that employees and firms navigate their needs and wants from each other. In the past year we have found that candidates quietly quitting their jobs, aren’t dissatisfied with working, but the work they are doing. Quiet quitting is a sign that you are not in the place you are meant to be, and that you should consider moving into a role where you would flourish.
Quiet quitting shouldn’t be the point where effective boundaries are set in your role. This should happen on day one.
