What is ‘jobwashing’?


There’s another buzzword entering the job market: Jobwashing!

With the candidate market so short in previous years, it is no shock to anyone that employers have made compromises about salaries, benefits and flexibility. But what has also occurred is that employers and recruiters are sometimes overselling a role or a company in order to fill a position.

This is called jobwashing.

The term originates out of greenwashing, which is a spin term that describes a form of marketing that tries to deceptively convince the public that a business is environmentally friendly. Jobwashing then is an overpromised quality of work to get candidates through the recruitment process.

There are consequences of this for everyone involved. For the candidate, this means making a decision about your career that isn’t as informed as you originally thought. This leads to less trust in the recruitment process, distrust in an employer and ultimately will lead to quitting. For a business, this lack of trust can damage the company reputation and will cost the company more money when they need to replace their candidate.
